Einige Monate vor dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs in einem deutschen KZ auf dem Gebiet Polens: Der Lagerkommandant demonstriert seine Vorstellungen von einer Gesellschaft ohne Moral, in der das Gewissen als ein historischen Hindernis und somit als überflüssig gilt. Er bedient sich dabei des Stückes "König Ödipus" von Sophokles. Die auf einem Mythos basierende Tragödie dieses Autors der Klassik soll in dem KZ nicht nur gespielt, sondern "gelebt" werden. Der Lagerkommandant Kurt, Vertreter eines mörderischen, menschenverachtenden Regimes, übernimmt dabei die Rolle der Götter. Ein jüdischer Häftling, ein Jugendfreund des Kommandanten, wird gezwungen, den eigenen Vater zu töten und mit seiner Mutter ein Kind zu zeugen.

Acțiunea se petrece cu câteva luni înaintea sfârșitului celui de-al Doilea Război Mondial într-un lagăr de concentrare german în Polonia ocupată: Comandantul lagărului vrea să exemplifice ideile sale legate de o societate fără concepte etice în care sentimentul vinovăției devine o piedică depășită de istorie și drept urmare inutil. În acest scop el se folosește de piesa "Oedip rege" de Sofocle. Din ordinul lui tragedia scrisă de autorul clasic nu va fi doar jucată ci chiar "trăită" de deținuții lagărului. Comandantul Kurt, reprezentant al unui regim criminal, inuman și cinic, preia rolul zeilor antici. Un deținut evreu, prietenul din tinerețe al comandantului, este condamnat să-și ucidă tatăl și s-o lase gravidă pe propria lui mamă.

The story is set a few months before the end of World War II inside a German concentration camp located in occupied Poland. The Camp commander wants to set an example pertaining to his own view of a society without ethics, in which the feeling of guilt becomes obsolete. As such, he uses the play Oedipus Rex, by Sophocles, which is orders be played out, but not merely as a performance, but as part of the convicts every day lives. Commander Kurt, the image of a murderous regime, inhuman and cynical, takes the role of the ancient gods. One Jewish prisoner, a friend of the commander when they were both young, is forced to murder his father and leave pregnant his own mother.
